Ordinance Regulating And Authorizing Open Burning In McLeod County

In a joint effort between the McLeod County Board of Commissioners, the Sheriff's Office, County Attorney, McLeod County Association of Townships and the McLeod County Fire Chiefs Association, the McLeod County Board of Commissioners adopted an "Ordinance Regulating and Authorizing Open Burning in McLeod County" on January 18, 2022.  The ordinance formally went into effect on February 08, 2022.

The most significant change that will come from the adoption of the ordinance, which is modeled off of Minnesota State Statute, is that rural residents in McLeod County will no longer obtain paper burning permits from their township.  Instead, residents must call the McLeod County Sheriff's Office at 888-440-3134 and press "0" to speak with a dispatcher to inform them of their burn and to ensure that burning restrictions are not currently in place.  This call will serve as the permit to burn; burns that are not reported to the Sheriff's Office by phone are unpermitted.
