About Us

The mission of the McLeod County Highway Department is to:
    • Provide road and bridge maintenance services that are timely, efficient, and effective.
    • Manage high quality construction projects that are professionally designed and administered.
    • Maintain a geographic information system (GIS) that has accurate, current, and complete geospatial data.
The Maintenance Division is responsible for the year-round maintenance of the County's 400 mile highway system. In addition to keeping the highways clear of ice and snow, the maintenance crews perform routine patching, crack filling, shouldering, and gravel blading. They also repair and replace culverts, maintain bridges, mow and control weeds in our ditches, as well as a host of other activities. Our shop foreman and mechanic are responsible for maintaining all of the vehicles within the department including tandem-axle trucks, graders, loaders, tractors, heavy and light-duty pick-ups, trailers, and other miscellaneous equipment.

The Engineering Division is responsible for the planning, design, and inspection of highway improvement projects. Projects include design and construction of highway reconstruction projects, as well as overlays, seal coat projects, and seasonal pavement marking. The Engineering Section also performs annual bridge safety inspections and is responsible for maintaining the County's pavement and sign management system.

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Division is responsible for providing information to county employees as well as the general public in a digital mapping environment. A snapshot of the various data sets that are maintained include: the official county map, judicial and county ditch maps, high accuracy parcel data, 911 rural address system, aerial photography, and LiDAR data.
